I am working on many progects at this time! I have my fisrt book out, OUR LIVES HAVE. I have also printed my fist photo calendar call avalon sunsets which shows the sunsets from the east coast of newfoundland the farthest eastern point in north america). I am also a feild tec. at the ahrcaeology site here in newfoundland call The site of Fort Louis and The New Fort
Well it is not all digging in the dirt and mud here. We also must catalog and store every artifact we find. When the year is over we must be able to find any and all artifacts with a single ID number and site title that, you can see, I am meticulously inputing on an atifact with a fine tipped calligraphy pen. Using basic clear nail polish as a base we apply india ink on top with one more layer of clear nail polish on top of the ink so the ink will not rub off. We must also clear and preserve the more delicate or decayed for transport to the conservators to be stabalized and perhaps broght back to a suitable state of viewing for the public.
This is what makes our job so tough! Asyou can see; there are holes and other nomalies dug into the ground, well after the site was abandoned by the british for lack of military purpose. Fences and roads and even houses have been placed in and around this site. Making locating parts of the forts that lay under these obstuctions impossible!
Special Thanks to Mayor Hogan, Margie Hatfield, Matthew Simmons, Dave Fry, Steve Mills and any I have missed. for with out these fine men and women we would not have a dig here in Placentia. It has been a task to say the least, tring to get people to come see us out here. It is just so far away from everything really, We dont have a timmies or walmart. But the one thing that pushes us out this way is the fact that we have the Greatest people here. Doing work that will past the test of time.
I am prode to be born Right Here In Placentia Newfoundland. There is a real pride in doing the work that so many people find so ah inspiring. Needless to say come see us this spring, Who knows what we will find!
This is great! What is it you ask?
This is a canon ball we found last year and let me tell you those things are heavy! I never really know what one would even look like being in the ground for as long as it was . Yet since then I was looking at the several other cannon balls we found and I can say that they come in many sizes, wieghts and even shapes. Yes even shapes. We find them in dumbell shapes called bar shot where the ball looks like it was sliced in half and a bar put in the middle of the two halves. These where used to shoot out the sails and rigging of ships!
If you would like to see more artifacts follow this link to the artifact page http://goldsworthymediablitz.yolasite.com/artifacts.php
As you can see our site is big! Really big! The houses in the back grond there are all on top of what is part of the entrance to the New fort. The French and English used this part of there individual forts as there entry way. I guess it was the best place for an entrance and the English and french must have thought the same thing! :)
You can see how it just pokes out of the ground and in this other picture here just the tops show up! There is something up here, But we dont really know what this anomally is just yet.
We have to sand bag the foundations that we uncover so to protect them from collapsing under there own weight! This also aids in the uncovering of the site in the future!
As you can see I have graduated a feild study course in archaeology thanks to the guidence of Steve Mills my teacher and mentor for two years. I thank you so much for your all you have done for us here in Placentia!
Here are some shots of our team of Feild technicans And Head Archaeologists Thanks guys for you Most in depth look into our past. I cant say enough about any one person in these photos. From our (data word processor lol you know who you are) who is a wiz kid on the keyboard or good ol' berky, how about Philly V, Or who could forget glass pick scotty. Really thought to you all I take my hat off And thank you all for you concerted efforts!
Thanks Matt for the crain pics!
As you can see here there are a lot of flat rocks. I though this might be a deviding line between the fort and the beach front. As we went deeper we found a drain of sorts on one side of it and what looked like small shovel mark lined up and strait threw a peat layer, this could have been a crude drain. There are lots of reasons why they line up the way they do but I love the fact that these objects in the ground are trying to tell us a story that unfolded over 300 years ago! And with any luck we will be able to tell you that story over the many years it will take to uncover the truth!
Up Dates
I am Pretty sure We have found the french Ramparts this year! We have been digging up next to the ramparts the last three years and we have been chaseing what some where calling a old french hut while others called it nothing at all! So now with three years of effort and a great deal of paperwork we now know that It is a very good chance we are caseing the front of the french ramparts!
I will be posting new pics of our work here in the comming weeks!
